Jack Willsher’s 35 year old 20 lap race record will stand for another twelve months after a mid race stoppage allowed American import Travis Senter to storm to an emphatic win. On a perfect night forsenter_jack450.jpg the racing the Formula 500’s turned on some great action in a perfect build up to the Oval Express Series that begins post Christmas.

Over 30 cars contested the Jack Willsher Cup on a perfect night for racing at Sungold Stadium. South Australian Gavin Hutton qualified on the pole with Victorian champ Jessica Moulden alongside. Steve Caunt and Queensland’s Brock Hallett filled the second row while Jock Baker and defending race winner Leigh Van Ginneken made up the third row.

17 year old Hallett shot to the early race lead as he sped by Moulden in turn 2 on the opening lap and he looked to put distance between himself and the classy field. The race for Jack’s record lasted until lap 7 when Van Ginneken flipped in turn 4 after a great battle with Caunt.

Fifteenth starting Travis Senter, the lone American in the field, was the big mover having already made his way to sixth place using the highline to great effect by mid race.

Pole sitter Hutton slipped back during the early stages however he soon found himself in second as he raced past Moulden and set off after the leader Hallett.

With 10 laps remaining the race was halted once again when a luckless Brady Cudia slammed the wall on the main straight in a hard impact. This reset the field with Senter looking ominous as he was restarting in fifth behind Hallett, Hutton, Moulden and Caunt.

What developed was a great dice for the lead before Hutton gained the ascendancy and set about distancing himself from the challengers. Senter had everyone’s attention as firstly he s
ped around Caunt and into fourth.

The American then quickly dispensed with Moulden and Hallett as he attempted to chase down Hutton. The pair raced wheel to wheel for the lead with only two laps remaining before Senter gained the advantage and went on to win a great race. Hutton and Caunt filled the minors to round out the podium finishers.

“I have to thank Steve (Caunt) for the opportunity to race here tonight. We were originally only coming to run the Oval Express Series but when this event got rescheduled I was keen to come and try and win this prestigious race,” explained Senter in victory lane.

“We weren’t good in the heats but we got it going for the final and it worked out real good,” he said.

Senter was less than impressive throughout the heats as he was coming to terms with Ben Devlin’s ACT #69 Stallard. Travis’ own USA #22 was still in Sydney and with Ben unable to make the event due to work, Travis stepped into his ride. Making wholesale changes to the car throughout the night, the diminutive American sounded an ominous warning to his rivals as to how good he will be in his own equipment during
the Oval Express Series.

Fourth placed Alex McLaughlin sped from twentieth starting spot on the grid after a horror start to the night when the current Australia #3 detonated a motor in the first heat. The WA based Okely Motorsport team replaced motors allowing the 19 year old to transfer through the B-main before embarking on a scorching run through the A-main.

Hallett eventually finished fifth ahead of Moulden, Jock Baker, Michael Wise, Shane Van Duynhoven and Darryl Willsher in tenth.

Scott Dillon won the B-main from Wise, Dale Sinclair and Matt Turner in fourth. Tim Van Ginneken experienced a scary moment when his right rear wheel broke loose in turn 4 however he managed to bring the car to a safe stop.

Hallett signalled his intentions in heat 1 when he romped to the win ahead of Leigh Van Ginneken while Sinclair filled third. Hallett ran down and passed Leigh in an impressive turn of speed and the ‘teenage sensation’ finished .04 seconds outside Matt Brown’s existing 10 lap record.

Jock Baker sped to the win in heat 2 over Steve Caunt and Jessica Mould
en in a depleted field. Darryl Willsher’s carbie broke loose on his R6 while Jesse Ellston and Kate Searle were others not to finish.

Rookie Jamie Hennessy raced to the heat 3 win from the front row while Hutton sped from eighth to second. Grant Pearson held third over Scott Dillon and Tasmanian Kristian Kelly in fifth. McLaughlin’s motor expired mid race in a ball of flames and a conrod let go in dramatic fashion.

Jessica Moulden showed the way in heat 4 to defeat Steve Caunt and Senter. Hallett raced from the rear to finish fourth. Tim Van Ginneken and Jeremy Beddison had an incident in turn 1 as they both failed to finish.

Hutton won heat 5 from the second row ahead of Darryl Willsher and Graham Mollenoyux. Kate Searle led early before fading to fourth ahead of Cudia.

Brett Willsher cruised to the easy win the final heat of the night but not before Hennessy flipped in turn 2. Kevin Freeman enjoyed his best run of the night finishing second from Shane Van Duynhoven. Kristian Kelly and Leigh Van Ginneken rounded out the top 5.

The Jack Willsher Formula 500 Cup was running in conjunction with the third round of the Eureka Sprintcar Series at Sungold Stadium that was taken out by South Australian Steven Lines. Racing from the Sprintcars and Formula 500’s was first class and is a sign of things to come at Sungold Stadium on New Years Day when they both return to Sungold Stadium for two great events. The Formula 500’s will contest round 5 of the Oval Express Series while the Sprintcars will be running the final round of the Wanless World Series Sprintcars Speedweek.
